Find Out If VOIP Service Is For You

VOIP is another one of those computer acronyms that stands for Voice Over Internet Protcol. It is a technology that is growing very quickly, and the primary reason for that is that it is helping both residential customers and business customers to save money.

You really do not need to know how VOIP works to use it, but there are some very fundamental things you need to understand. First of all, if you want to use a VOIP service for your home or business, the VOIP service typically assumes that you already have a stable and reliable highspeed Internet connection. The highspeed Internet connection is REQUIRED for VOIP service, but the VOIP service itself does not include the highspeed Internet.

For home use, that might be cable Internet or it might be residential DSL. But whichever of those it is, note the keywords I used above: stable and reliable. Many residential highspeed Internet connections are neither reliable nor are they stable. If that is the case with your highspeed Internet connection, then you have two choices: (1) get a different highspeed Internet service that DOES provide a stable and reliable connection, or (2) stop shopping for VOIP services, because it will not work well with an unstable and unreliable highspeed Internet connection.

In fact, studies have shown that in more than 95% of the cases where customers have called to complain about the quality of their VOIP services, the problem has been with the highspeed Internet connection, and NOT with the VOIP service.

The reason for this is that VOIP makes and receives phone calls using your highspeed Internet connection. Obviously, if that connection is neither reliable nor stable, your VOIP service and voice quality on that call is going to suffer.

What if your highspeed Internet connection is satellite? A satellite highspeed Internet connection is not recommended for good VOIP service. Most satellite services have a monthly bandwidth limitation, and if you do much calling at all, you will likely exceed that monthly limitation with VOIP quite quickly. But even if you do not do much calling, the lag time to go to the satellite and back, which is referred to as the latency time, is going to make VOIP very difficult, and you will not be happy with it.

Remember I talked about the "reliable" aspect of your highspeed Internet connection? For years and years, you have grown accustomed to hearing a dial tone when you picked up the phone to make a call, and that has been extremely reliable. But if your highspeed Internet connection goes down, so does your ability to make or receive phone calls.

If you do have a reliable and stable highspeed Internet connection, there is no reason not to consider installing VOIP immediately. You can even cancel your existing phone line with the phone company after you get VOIP installed, if you want to. That phone line with the phone company is probably costing you about $25 per month, and that is just for dial tone and maybe local calls, but certainly no extra features like caller ID and clearly no long distance calling.

By comparison, most VOIP service plans allow you to make unlimited amounts of local and long distance calls within the continental US, and some also include Canada and even Puerto Rico. They also typically include extra features at no additional cost, such as voice mail, caller ID, calling waiting, and more. And all that still costs around $25 per month, the same as you were paying for just dial tone with the phone company!

The economics of it are there, and you are probably going to have highspeed Internet anyway, so it's time to check out the possibilities and start talking without worrying about the cost of calling your sister in Seattle and your mother in Denver!

Freckles - Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Freckles are flat, circular spots that typically range in the size of the head of a nail. Freckles are small tan spots of melanin on the skin of people with fair complexions. There are two basic types of freckles first is ephelides and second is lentigines Ephelides flat spots that are red or light-brown and typically appear during the sunny months and fade in the winter. They are most often found in people with light complexions and in some families, they are an hereditary (genetic) trait. Lentigines (singular: lentigo, from the Latin word for lentil): Children may develop a small tan, brown, or black spot which tends to be darker than an ephelis-type freckle and which does not fade in the winter. This kind of spot is referred to as lentigo simplex. Lentigines are part of a rare genetic syndrome, for the most part they are just isolated and unimportant spots.

Desktop or Laptop? Choose the Right Computer For You!

When considering the purchase of a new computer, many people find themselves asking - should I buy a desktop or laptop computer? I buy over one hundred computers a year for my clients, and am often asked this same question. In this article I will share with you the same advice I give my clients.

Cost Considerations

Laptops are generally speaking, more expensive than desktops. A similarly equipped laptop going to cost at least 25% more initially, but the lifetime of the average laptop is generally shorter than than the lifetime of the average desktop. Face it - laptops are fragile, and the inevitible bumps and bruises eventually take their toll. The bottom line is, the portability of a laptop comes at a premium price.

Some people create a "home space" for their laptops, with include such accessories and peripherals as an external monitor, keyboard, mouse, scanner, and/or printer. If you can afford it, this scenario gives you the best of both worlds.

Speed

Laptops, generally speaking, are slower than desktops. There are many factors that go into the speed of a computer, and obviously some laptops are faster than some desktops. However, generally speaking:

-- Laptops are designed to run on battery power. Their components begin to power down after brief periods of non-use, and it takes time for them to come back to life.

-- All but the high end laptop hard drives are 5400rpm, whereas entry level desktop hard drives are 7200rpm. More RPMS means more speed, but also requires more power.

-- Laptop processors use much less energy...and therefore can't perform as many operations in the same amount of time as a desktop processor.

Do you NEED Portability?

If you don't need the portability, get a desktop. I have clients who paid big money for a high dollar laptop, docking station, separate keyboard, mouse, and monitor...only to have it sit on their desk. Maybe portability to you means you like to sit on the couch at night and surf the web - fine. (I do that myself!) But if your computer is not going to move, save the money and get a faster computer - buy a desktop.

Ergonomics

Due to the very nature of laptops, they do not typically provide as good of ergonomics as desktop machines. If you spend a lot of time on your computer, and plan to buy a laptop, you may need to create a space with good ergonomics to work. There are many resources on the web to help you do this - just Google ergonomics.

Theft

Another consideration is the possibility of theft. Laptops are at the top of the list for petty thieves, and you must guard them carefully when you are out and about. There are theft recovery systems such as Lojack available to help you recover your computer if stolen, for a price.

17) Has a sudden desire to be helpful with the laundry.

18) Has unexplained scratches or bruises on his or her neck or back.

19) Suddenly wants to try new love techniques.

20) He/she fairly suddenly stops having sex with you.

21) He/she suddenly wants more sex, more often.

22) Supposedly works a lot of overtime, but it never shows up on the pay stub.

23) Picks fights in order to stomp out of the house.

24) You find out by accident he or she took vacation day or personal time off from work - but supposedly worked on those days.

25) Shows a sudden interest in a different type of music.

26) Spouse's co-workers are uncomfortable in your presence.

27) Has a sudden preoccupation with his or her appearance.

28) Spends an excessive amount of time on the computer, especially after you have gone to bed.

29) He throws up a lot because he just ate at his mistress's house and had to eat the dinner you prepared when he got home.

30) Your spouse is away from home, either nights or on trips, more than previously.

31) His/her clothes smell of an unfamiliar perfume or after-shave. You see lipstick on your husband's shirt.

32) The amount of money being deposited into your checking account drops off.

33) You find items of intimate apparel or other small gift-type items that you did not give your spouse.

34) Your spouse seems less comfortable around you and is "touchy" and easily moved to anger.

35) You get calls where the caller hangs up when he or she hears your voice.

36) He/she loses attention in the activities in the home.

37) Your intuition (gut feeling) tells you that something is not right.

38) He/she has a definite change in attitude towards everyone in the home.

39) She uses a low voice or whisper on the phone or hangs up quickly.
